2007年12月19日、花柳界400年の歴史の中、初の西洋人女性が芸者としてが受け入れられ、紗幸という名でお披露目となりました。 紗幸は社会人類学を専門としています。社会人類学では、研究テーマとしている社会に、研究者自らが入り経験をすることで、そのテーマの理解を深めることが要求されます。 紗幸は、東京で最も古い6つの芸者地区のひとつである浅草の花柳界に、一年間の許可を得て、社会人類学研究のフィールドワークを行う目的で芸者活動を行っていました。彼女はいくつかの芸事の訓練を受けており、横笛を専門としていました。 紗幸は、オックスフォード大学で社会人類学の博士号を取得し、日本社会を専門としています。彼女は、人生の半分を日本ですごし、また、日本で最も古い大学、慶應義塾大学を卒業しました。 紗幸は、世界中の多くの大学で講義を行い、日本文化についての著作の発行し、また、人類学的ドキュメンタリーの制作監督も務めています。 本「Sayuki: inside the flower and willow world」は、パンマクミランオーストラリアより、2008年に出版される予定です。ドキュメンタリーは、年間を通して撮影されています。
