Captain Izham Ismail is a distinguished aviation leader whose more than four-decade career with Malaysia Airlines and Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) is defined by resilience, transformation, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
Captain Izham began his career as a pilot and quickly distinguished himself through his exceptional flying skills and leadership abilities. In 1997, he was the pilot-in-command of Malaysia Airlines’ first Boeing 777-200 flight from Seattle to Kuala Lumpur and back, a landmark journey that set world records for the longest flight and fastest round-the-world flight by a commercial airliner at the time. The journey covered 23,310 miles in a total flight time of 41 hours and 59 minutes.
Throughout his career with Malaysia Airlines, Captain Izham held a succession of key leadership positions, steadily rising through the ranks before being appointed Group Chief Executive Officer of Malaysia Aviation Group in 2017. He took the helm at a challenging time, with the Group facing significant financial, operational and structural pressures.
Under his leadership, MAG embarked on a comprehensive transformation focused on strengthening financial sustainability, improving operational efficiency, enhancing customer experience and building greater organisational resilience. He subsequently led the Group through one of the most challenging periods in aviation history, navigating the unprecedented disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic while overseeing the airline's restructuring and subsequent recovery.
Captain Izham is known for his hands-on leadership style, strategic foresight and ability to navigate complex challenges. His career reflects a leadership philosophy grounded in resilience, accountability and a strong commitment to people, qualities that have earned him respect across Malaysia and the international aviation community.
Beyond his leadership at MAG, Captain Izham has held several prominent positions within the aviation industry. He served as a Board member of Tourism Malaysia from 2019 to 2022, and was a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Board of Governors from 2021 to 2024. He also served on the oneworld governing board for more than seven years and was a member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA). In Malaysia, he served as Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council under the National Aviation Consultative Council (NACC).
After more than 40 years with Malaysia Airlines and Malaysia Aviation Group, Captain Izham retired from MAG in January 2026. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the aviation industry, he was named the recipient of the 2026 CAPA Lifetime Achievement Award, honouring his profound and lasting contributions to commercial aviation and his leadership through a period of unprecedented transformation and disruption.
