Jonathan Firth is a senior executive in the global space industry with more than 25 years of experience across aerospace, transportation, infrastructure, satellite communications, and emerging technologies. Over the course of his career, he has worked at the intersection of technology, commercial strategy, operations, and international market development, helping organisations scale complex and highly innovative businesses in rapidly evolving industries.
Jonathan began his career within the Virgin Group, initially working on major rail infrastructure projects with Virgin Rail, including the Pendolino and Super Voyager programmes in the United Kingdom. He later moved to Virgin Atlantic, where he led large operational and business transformation initiatives. These early experiences gave him deep expertise in managing large-scale programmes, operational complexity, customer-focused innovation, and highly regulated industries.
In 2004, Jonathan joined the founding leadership team of Virgin Galactic during the earliest stages of commercial spaceflight development. At a time when private space companies were still largely experimental, he became part of the team helping establish the operational and commercial foundations of what would eventually become one of the world’s most recognised space ventures.
Over the course of approximately 15 years within the Virgin space ecosystem, Jonathan held senior leadership roles across Virgin Galactic, The Spaceship Company, and Virgin Orbit. His responsibilities covered programme development, infrastructure planning, operational readiness, commercial strategy, and international partnerships.
One of his key responsibilities was supporting the development of Spaceport America in New Mexico, the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport. During this period, Jonathan worked closely with regulators, government agencies, aerospace partners, and operational teams to help establish the systems and infrastructure required for commercial spaceflight operations.
His experience during this period gave him first-hand insight into the realities of building an entirely new commercial sector from the ground up. Beyond the engineering and technology, this involved creating investor confidence, navigating regulation, developing operational frameworks, and proving that commercial space activities could evolve into sustainable businesses.
Following his time with Virgin, Jonathan joined D-Orbit as Group Chief Operating Officer. At the time, the company was an emerging European space venture focused on orbital transportation and space logistics. During his tenure, D-Orbit grew rapidly into an international commercial space company with operations across Europe, North America, and the Middle East.
D-Orbit became known for pioneering a new category of in-space transportation services through its ION Satellite Carrier platform, often described as a “space logistics vehicle” or “space taxi.” The spacecraft is designed to transport and deploy satellites more efficiently once they reach orbit, allowing customers to place satellites into precise positions while reducing costs and improving mission flexibility.
Under Jonathan’s leadership, the company successfully scaled its operations, completed multiple commercial missions, expanded internationally, and secured significant investment backing. He later transitioned into a corporate development role focused on sovereign space capability, strategic partnerships, emerging markets, and international growth across Asia and the Middle East.
His work has involved close engagement with governments, regulators, investors, and industry leaders on the future of commercial space infrastructure and the growing importance of the space economy. He has also been closely involved in discussions surrounding autonomous systems, AI-enabled spacecraft operations, in-orbit servicing, and the long-term sustainability of space activities.
Today, Jonathan is recognised as a highly engaging speaker who brings a practical and commercially grounded perspective to discussions about the future of space. Drawing on decades of experience inside some of the world’s most ambitious space ventures, he helps audiences understand how developments in space are increasingly influencing industries including finance, AI, telecommunications, logistics, defence, climate monitoring, and global infrastructure.
Rather than focusing on distant science-fiction scenarios, Jonathan speaks about the real economic, technological, and geopolitical shifts already taking place, and why the commercial space economy is becoming one of the most important growth sectors of the coming decades.
